Want a good tasting arid tolerant tomato that also can be a sauce tomato? Punta Banda is that tomato. We were introduced to this tomato by Native Seed/SEARCH and it in the 2025 Farm Top 10. The original source of the variety is from the Punta Banda Peninsula in Baja, California.
This is a determinate-ish plant that put on about 30% of its fruit in a first flush and the remaining 70% of fruits in a second flush. We didn't mind this as it gave us two distinct harvests. While the size is much smaller than a Roma or other standard paste tomato, it can be used as a paste tomato. We preferred the taste of the Punta Banda over a standard Roma tomato. The Punta Banda wasn't squishy and had a nice snap due to the thick skin.
The fruits are larger cherry tomato sized and are very thick skinned. They tolerated our alkaline soils and windy conditions well, and did not like to be trellised or manipulated. The only thing we did was add our farm nutrient mix at planting and left the plants alone until harvest time. 0.15g
