Waltham Butternut Squash

Bred by farmer Charles Leggett of Stow, in Middlesex County in the 1940's by crossing gooseneck squash with other unknown varieties.  He brought his new variety to professor Robert F. Young at the Waltham Field Station of the Massachusetts College of Agriculture.  After stabilizing, it was released as Waltham Butternut.  "Smooth as butter and sweet as a nut".
